We are thrilled to talk about our collaboration with Nightshift, a collective and laboratory for artistic research and production based in Brussels. Aroused by their beautiful aesthetics and clever approach, we set up a limited run of 4 items in our webshop. For the occasion we sat down with the crew to discuss their art practice, values and many other things.

C12: How did this collaboration come to life?
All of us have spent quite some time in C12, we are children of the night. So we were thrilled when we were contacted by you guys to set up this project. We had a pop-up store last year, just before Covid arrived, and sold a bag to one of your crew members. That might have started it all.
C12: How would you describe Nightshift’s philosophy?
Our collective was created three years ago and is the result of a long friendship that lasts for a decade or so. For a long time we have been making t-shirts and selling them among friends. While realizing the demand for our work was rising, we decided to officialize our structures and create a tangible collection for prêt-à-porter.
C12: How is Nightshift organised behind the scenes?
We try to work as independently as possible and control the process from A till Z, which includes designs, printing, communication and distribution among others. We are a team of eight people divided in two groups. One team is bridging the gap between prêt-à-porter and couture, they are architectes, stylistes, designers, … while the other team consists of photographers, designers, videographers and even an accountant. We all share a passion for fashion and couture. The clothing you might know us from is only just the top of the iceberg, we work on many other things.
C12: What’s the inspiration for the C12 x Nightshift collection?
We have found inspiration in the streets of Brussels. Just as C12, we wish to push forward our city and its identity. We opted for high standards, since we are against fast fashion with cheap and crappy materials. And obviously the darkness of the night has also inspired us, it’s part of our DNA just as much as it’s part of C12.

Nightshift has selected a playlist to celebrate our collaboration.

The Corona crisis is keeping our doors closed and dancefloor empty for several weeks now, with no hopes yet on new line-ups and crowds of enthusiastic dancers. But this unprecedented situation isn’t holding us still. Continuing to support our local Brussels and Belgian electronic music scene, C12 is proud to announce 10 music compilations dubbed Social Distancing. All artists involved are Belgian or strongly connected to the Brussels scene. Confirmed are Le Motel, Stellar OM Source, A.Brehme, Front De Cadeaux, Davy, OCB Casa Voyager, Cabasa, Techno Thriller, Orphan Swords, Different Fountains, Bear Bones Lay Low, Gols, Hadone, … and our residents Session 4000, Kafim & Chris Ferreira. Compilations will also be curated by female artists promoting platform ‘Psst Mlle’ and queer culture collective ‘Benediction’.
Each edition consists of a collection of several tracks and will be released every two weeks, leading to a total of approximately fifty tracks. All music will be available to add on your favorite streaming service Soundcloud, Youtube, Spotify (coming soon) and Bandcamp. In addition for each track we offer a limited amount of 500 free downloads through our Bandcamp page, where donations are also enabled for those who wish to support us and the artists involved.
The first compilation – C12 presents ‘Social Distancing 1.1’ – is techno oriented, while the focus on upcoming releases will shift towards IDM/electro, techno, breakbeat, experimental, EBM, cosmic and house music among others.

We join forces with newborn Brussels based platform ‘Le Bureau Electronique’. The brainchild of Marc Jacobs, since seven years programmer of electronic music at the centre for fine arts Bozar, hosts a series of concerts. After its maiden edition at Listen Festival, C12 is happy to collaborate with Le Bureau Electronique for a second run. We had a word with Marc.

“I started Le Bureau Electronique as a platform to gather artists who all share a certain musical DNA, an identity that is hard to put one’s finger on. I don’t like to talk in genres and I’m not a fan of the word ‘experimental’, it’s more about a state of mind, a freedom of expression. I believe these artists deserve more support. Due to the nature of their creativity, they mostly work very DIY and independently. None of the existing structures are capable of assisting them. I want to employ my experience and network to join forces.”
“What kind of artists? To name a few of my personal favourites: Piet Dierickx, Otto Lindholm, Monolithe Noir, Obsequies, Orphan Swords, Stijn Demeulenaere, Zeno van den Broek, Zoe Mcpherson, Echo Collective, Ben Bertrand, Onrust, Bow, Sylvain Chauveau, Aymeric de Tapol, Beastly Tears, … And of course The Angströmers, who will be performing in C12. They are two guys from Brussels who run the Angstrom mastering studio and record label. Their music is a mixture of abstract electronica, modular synths and collaborative recordings they performed with a traditional Haitian band. Think of abstract noise and weird rhythms, very dub infused.”

“I work and live in Brussels. I have been programming electronic music at Bozar for seven years now. Especially the seven editions of Bozar Electronic Arts Festival were highlight to me. Being able to offer cutting edge line-ups in a culturally important place as the museum, is always satisfying. For Le Bureau Electronique I’ll always be looking for the best venues and context for each show. To put the legendary King Midas Sound on the bass heavy sound system of C12 is a perfect fit.

Brussels based collective Chanoir has many cards to play. Music, video, graphic design, street wear, haute couture, styling, photography, … they wish not to be narrowed down into one creative outing, choosing a pluridisciplinary approach. Before their first C12 takeover, we sat down with Antoine, Thomas and Luca.
Thomas: “Chanoir was born in Paris about seven years ago. We were organising huge dark techno rave parties in big venues such as Palais De Tokyo. The name comes from ‘Le Chat Noir’, which was a was a Parisian nineteenth-century entertainment establishment where people like Victor Hugo used to go, thought to be the first modern cabaret. I moved to Brussels to get out of nightlife, but the collective stayed active and got a new interpretation over the years. Funny enough nightly events quickly became part again of Chanoir. We just like to throw parties I guess.”
Luca: “I’m the booker and resident dj, I’ve been around now for a year and a half. We have been doing a residency at Café Central for years, our nights were always packed and sweaty. We’re very excited to do our first C12 takeover which will stay very close to our musical DNA of electronic body music and dark industrial techno. We prefer to stay away from big expensive headliners though. Our focus is on interesting scenes worldwide and upcoming talents.”
Antoine: “For this edition we invited ‘Metaphore Collective’ from Marseille for example. We feel very connected to the scene over there, the have a similar spirit. We are even working on a collaborative project called BM844, the exact number of kilometers between Brussels and Marseille, managed by Alex Aynie.”
Thomas: “Graphic design and visual identity is essential for Chanoir. We have evolved into a textile brand, we are selling streetwear. Malika Rotchild is involved, together we do the sewing and print. Antoine, who is a photographer, has been taking thousands of photos. Our archive of pictures, scans and designs is the engine of our visual identity. As with our taste in music, we wish not to take things too seriously. Our favorite dj’s are the ones able to play a rap track into a dark industrial techno set!”
